Sinfin Energy starts up the Hydraulic Power Station of Barreda (Cantabria)

  • It is the first hydraulic installation in Spain connected to the network with Hydroscrew technology
  • Two hydro-screws have been installed in parallel, capable of producing a total power of 70 kW (35 kW each)
  •  Produces 100% renewable energy

After several months of testing, on 30 January 2020 the Sinfin Barreda Plant, located on the banks of the Saja River, in Cantabria, was put into operation. It is the first Hydroscrew installation connected to the grid in Spain (it will start operating in the next few days).

Sinfin Barreda produces 100% renewable energy. The plant has two hydroscrews placed in parallel, capable of generating 70 kW of power (35 kW each) 24 hours a day. The energy produced will be used for sale to the electricity grid and to develop experimental projects for non-domestic self-consumption.

Hydroelectric use of water for industrial use

The hydraulic power station is located in the Cantabrian town of Torrelavega, specifically at the point where the river Saja diverts part of its course to serve the Solvay industrial plant.

An existing waterfall with a height of 2 meters has been used, producing a flow of 5 cubic meters per second between the two turbines. The turbines are of a fish-friendly design, allowing the fish to descend safely between the rotor blades.

Our Hydroscrew

Sinfin Energy’s Hydroscrew is based on an adaptation of the Archimedean Screw to use it as a hydraulic micro generation turbine, being able to take advantage of the fall in the water jumps and to produce clean and constant energy 24 hours a day.
